Exploring the Causes of Low Libido and No Sex Drive

Dec 29. 2023

A healthy sex life is an integral part of the overall well-being of men. It’s more than just physical intimacy; it’s about connection, confidence, and emotional fulfillment. Yet, many men experience periods of low libido or even a complete absence of sex drive, leaving them feeling frustrated and confused. But before succumbing to despair, understanding the common culprits behind this dampened desire is crucial.

Low libido is a condition characterized by a reduced desire for sexual activity or lack of sex drive. It is normal to experience fluctuations in libido throughout life, and it is common for one’s interest in sex to differ from their partner’s on occasion. Nevertheless, prolonged low libido can be concerning and may be a sign of an underlying health issue. In this article by Dr. Milena, we will explore some of the common causes of low libido in men.

Low Testosterone:

Testosterone, produced mainly by the testicles, is like the conductor of the male body orchestra. It controls the energy and the mood, builds muscles, strengthens bones, helps make sperm, and even sets the rhythm for your sex drive. But age and other factors such as chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity can turn down the volume on this conductor, leading to a quieter libido and loss of erections as well.

Hormonal Harmony Gone Missing:

The orchestra of hormones plays a pivotal role in the symphony of male sexuality. When the conductor, testosterone, loses its rhythm, the performance suffers. Testosterone’s decline is a natural part of aging, starting after age 40, but other factors like obesity, chronic stress, and medical conditions can accelerate the dip. This hormonal imbalance translates to decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and even fatigue.

Stress, the Libido Thief:

The modern world is a stress vortex; chronically elevated stress hormones can steal your mojo. Constantly engaging the fight-or-flight response causes your body to prioritize survival over romance. This leaves little energy for the sensual tango of desire. Chronic stress also disrupts sleep patterns, further diminishing energy levels and hindering sexual function.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs. According to a study, men with RLS have a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) compared to those without RLS. ED or Erectile Dysfunction refers to the inability to have or sustain an erection.

The study found that men experiencing RLS at least five times per month were approximately 50 percent more likely to develop ED than those without RLS. Furthermore, men who had more frequent episodes of RLS were at an even higher risk of experiencing impotence.

Mental Health Matters:

Mental health concerns like depression,  cognition reduction, anxiety, and body image issues can significantly impact libido. Depression can dampen pleasure and motivation, while anxiety can breed performance pressure and negative self-perception. Body image issues can lead to self-consciousness and reluctance to be intimate. Addressing these concerns through therapy, medication if needed, and practicing self-acceptance can pave the way for a rediscovery of sexual desire.

Medications and Medical Conditions:

Certain medications, including antidepressants, glucocorticoids, statins, anti-cancer medications,  antihistamines, and some pain relievers, can list low libido as a side effect. Additionally, medical conditions like diabetes, obesity, and chronic pain can affect hormone levels and sexual function. Consulting a healthcare professional regarding medication alternatives or managing underlying medical conditions can improve both overall health and sexual well-being.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy: Restoring the Balance:

Improving low testosterone naturally is the most important thing that a  man can do. Maintain ideal body weight, avoid developing diabetes, exercise as weight training at least 150 minutes per week, and avoid excessive alcohol. Most testosterone is produced at night so avoiding a disrupted sleep cycle is also important to keep the physiologic production. For men diagnosed with testosterone deficiency, Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can be a game-changer. TRT, through various methods like injections, gels, or patches, helps restore testosterone levels to a healthy range. This can significantly improve libido, erectile function, energy levels, and overall well-being.
