What is Osteoporosis?
Bones are constantly in a state of remodeling. The cells that build bone are called Osteoblasts, while cells that breakdown bone are called Osteoclasts.
As we grow, Osteoblasts build bone faster than it is broken down and Osteoblast activity predominates. After the age of approximately 35, the balance is disrupted in favor of the Osteoclasts and bone breakdown predominates.
Osteoporosis may occur when prolonged dominance in Osteoclast activity decreases bone density past a certain level.
Osteopenia vs. Osteoporosis
Osteopenia and Osteoporosis
differ in the degree of bone density decrease. We differentiate these using the bone density spectrum.
Osteopenia is the precursor to Osteoporosis where bone density is decreased in relation to normal bone.
Osteoporosis is characterized by significantly lower bone density and often manifests with changes to the bone structure.
