Prediabetes And The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease

Jun 20. 2021

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes also known as “glucose intolerance” is defined as fasting blood glucose values between 100 and 125 mg/dL, glycated hemoglobin levels between 5.7% and 6.4%, or during the oral glucose tolerance testing with glycemia between 140 mg/dL to 199 mg/dL. The odds of progression from prediabetes to diabetes are significant. In fact, metabolic abnormalities can be present 6 years before type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

Why is it dangerous?

The clinical implications of prediabetes are remarkable, and prevention is crucial. “Therefore, it is a clinical condition that cannot be minimized” was the warning given in the 70th Scientific Session of the North American College of Cardiology held in May 2021. People with pre-diabetes are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke than people with normal glucose levels. Prediabetes can trigger a severe cardiovascular accident, even if the patient is not diagnosed as diabetic, and increases mortality. High glucose levels can also cause inflammation of blood vessels, making them narrower, also leading to heart attack or stroke. This scenario is particularly dangerous because atherosclerosis can be without symptoms.

Prevention is the best medicine!

To manage prediabetes and prevent the progression to diabetes, the health care team must educate prediabetic patients about their risks and encourage them to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Sometimes 10 % weight loss is enough to reduce blood sugar levels. Starting a new drug at an earlier stage of prediabetes to control glucose levels can also be a measure to prevent diabetes onset.

A recent research published in the scientific journal “Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism” showed the consumption of 2 or more servings of whole fruit per day was associated with 36% lower odds of developing diabetes in the next half decade of their life. Authors said those who consume more fruits had to produce less insulin to lower their blood glucose levels.

Screening and monitoring of glucose levels with a CGM can prevent diabetes onset and avoid worst case outcomes.
